Why this matters now

There is no technology exception to Rule 1.1.

Lawyers around this country have been sanctioned for filing briefs built on citations that did not exist. Fined. Referred to their bar. Ordered to explain themselves in writing, on the record, where any client can read it.

Most of them were not reckless. They were busy. They used a tool they did not fully understand and trusted an answer that looked exactly like a real one. And when they told the court they didn't know it could invent authority, the court was not moved.

Competence means competence in the tools you actually use. The day AI touched a client matter in your practice, the duty to verify came with it — and it belongs to you, not to the machine.

And citations are only the risk you can see. Rule 1.6 walks in the moment client information goes into an AI tool — whether you invited it or not. Where does that text go? Is it retained? Is it training someone's model? Most lawyers using these tools have never had to answer those questions. The duty does not wait for you to ask them.

Here's the part nobody says plainly enough: this is a solvable problem. It takes a protocol, not a panic. That is what this session is for.

What you leave with

Work product, not a handout.

Everything below is built during the session, by you, for your practice. You close your laptop with it finished.

Written in session

Your firm AI use policy

A completed, adopted policy addressing competence, confidentiality, and supervision — ready for your files and your malpractice carrier. Not a template you promise yourself you'll finish. Delivered as an editable document you can revise as your practice and the tools change.

Tested in session

Legal AI prompts that hold up

You write and test your own — one for research, one for drafting, one for client communication — using the AI Thought Partner™ framework. You watch them work before you rely on them.

The ethics hour

The Anti-Hallucination Citation Verification Protocol

A four-checkpoint system that documents attorney review of every AI-generated citation before it reaches a filing. Defensible proof that you did the work. The ethics hour also covers confidential data handling under Rule 1.6 — how to vet a tool before client information ever touches it.

Your next 90 days

An implementation roadmap

Built to your practice area and firm size. What to pilot in month one, month two, month three — so this doesn't become another good intention.

Your CLE toolkit

Four attorney-ready tools you will build, customize, and keep.

Firm AI-Use Policy

An editable Word document covering confidentiality, appropriate uses, human verification, staff supervision, and client-data restrictions. You complete it in session, for your firm — customizable as your practice and the tools change.

Legal Prompt Framework

A practical, reusable framework for developing, testing, and improving prompts for legal research, drafting, review, and analysis — built on the AI Thought Partner™ method and tested by you during the session.

Citation-Verification Protocol

The four-checkpoint, step-by-step process for verifying AI-assisted research, authorities, quotations, and citations before anything is filed or sent — with documentation you can keep in the client file.

90-Day Implementation Roadmap

A practical, personalized plan for introducing safer, repeatable AI workflows into a solo or small firm — what to pilot in month one, two, and three, built to your practice area during the session.

How the four hours are spent

The agenda, as approved.

Four working modules, exactly as filed with and approved by the LSBA. All times Central.

10:00 – 10:10Welcome & framework overview
10:10 – 11:10Module 1 — The Strategic Shift: From Search to Strategy. Rethinking AI as a thought partner, not a search box, under the competence duty of Rule 1.1.
11:20 – 12:20Module 2 — Advanced Prompt Engineering for Legal Work. You write and test your own prompts for research, drafting, and client communication — live, against your practice.
12:30 – 1:30Module 3 — AI Agents & Workflow Design. Building supervised workflows that respect Rule 5.3 — because the machine is nonlawyer assistance, and you are responsible for it.
1:40 – 2:40Module 4 — Risk Mitigation & Ethics: The Louisiana Framework. The ethics hour. Rules 1.1, 1.6, and 5.3; the citation verification protocol; confidential data handling; and your firm AI use policy, completed in session.

Ten-minute breaks between modules. Program concludes at 2:40 PM Central.

Who this is for

Built for the practitioner, not the enterprise.

You do not need to be a technical person. You need to be a competent one, in the terms Rule 1.1 already requires. There is a difference, and it can be handled in an afternoon.

I am not a vendor. I don't have software to sell you, and I'm not a technologist here to explain your own profession back to you.

I have been a member of this bar for thirty-one years. I have prosecuted cases. I have run a juvenile section. I have stood in front of judges in this state for most of my working life, and I know exactly what it costs a lawyer to get something wrong on the record.

I also run AI in my own practice — every day, on real matters. I built a working system of AI agents, and I built the guardrails around it, because I understood the exposure before I understood the tools. That order matters.

I teach this the way I built it: from the practice side, with the rules in one hand and the work in the other. Everything in this session has been used by a working Louisiana lawyer before it was ever taught to one.

Straight answers

What lawyers ask me first.

I'm not a tech person. Will I be lost?

No. This session assumes you are a competent lawyer and a beginner with these tools, which describes most of the bar. There is no code, no jargon, and nothing to install beyond what you already have. If you can run a Zoom call and draft a motion, you can do this. The skill being taught is judgment, not engineering — and judgment is already your day job.

Is this just theory?

The opposite, and it's the reason enrollment is limited to 50 attorneys and the session is live rather than recorded. You will be working. You'll write and test prompts against your own practice. You'll complete a firm AI use policy while I'm on the line to answer questions about it. You'll walk through the verification protocol on a real citation. If you attend and take it seriously, you finish with four things done — not four things to do.

Why does this matter for my license?

Because the duty already applies whether or not anyone has told you so. Rule 1.1 requires competence in the tools you use in representation. Rule 1.6 governs what happens to client confidences when you paste them somewhere. Rule 5.3 makes you responsible for supervising nonlawyer assistance — and the machine is not going to supervise itself. ABA Formal Opinion 512 said the quiet part out loud in 2024. The ethics hour in this session is spent on exactly this, and you leave with documentation showing you took it seriously.

Is it safe to put client information into AI tools?

The honest answer is: it depends — on the tool, the settings, and the safeguards you put around it, and any answer shorter than that is selling you something. Some configurations retain what you enter; some use it for training; some can be governed appropriately. Learning to tell the difference, and writing a firm policy that draws the line for everyone in your office, is exactly what the ethics hour is for. You leave knowing how to evaluate a tool before client information ever touches it — not with a blanket promise that no one can honestly make.

The details

Everything in writing, before you register.

Enrollment. Enrollment is limited to 50 to keep the session lively and interactive. Registration closes when the seats are gone or at 5:00 p.m. Central on October 7, whichever comes first.

What you'll need. A laptop or desktop with a reliable internet connection. Free accounts with ChatGPT and Claude are sufficient to participate; paid tiers (ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro) are strongly recommended for the smoothest hands-on experience and are what most attendees will use going forward. Nothing to install beyond Zoom.

Materials. The session workbook and templates are delivered electronically before the program. The work product you build — your firm AI policy, tested prompts, the verification protocol, and your 90-day roadmap — is yours to keep.

CLE credit. Attendance is verified during the live session and reported by the sponsor to the Louisiana State Bar Association following the program. You will also receive a Certificate of Attendance for your records. Credit is awarded only for attendance verified in accordance with applicable requirements.

Out-of-state attorneys. Louisiana attorneys will receive 4.0 approved CLE hours, including 1.0 hour of ethics. Attorneys licensed in other jurisdictions should confirm their jurisdiction's requirements for claiming credit for an out-of-state program.

Cancellations and substitutions, at a glance. By October 1: full refund. Registrations may be transferred to another eligible attorney at no additional charge if the substitution request is received by 5:00 p.m. Central on October 7.

If plans change on our end. If the program is cancelled or cannot be delivered because of circumstances within the provider's control, registrants may choose a full refund or transfer their registration to a rescheduled program. If the program cannot be delivered due to circumstances beyond the provider's control, the program will be rescheduled and all registrations will be honored for the rescheduled date.

What happens next

Three steps between you and October 8.

1. Reserve your seat. Secure checkout through Stripe. Your payment confirmation includes the link to complete your Zoom registration, where you'll provide your name and Louisiana bar roll number.

2. Get confirmed. Each registration is personally reviewed and approved against the enrollment list. Once approved, Zoom sends your join link — keep it; it's unique to you.

3. Receive your materials. The participant workbook arrives electronically before October 8. The work product you build in session — your policy, prompts, protocol, and roadmap — is yours to keep afterward.

October 8. One session. Four tools you keep.

The math is not complicated. Four hours against the hours you give away every week to first drafts and starting-from-scratch research — and against what one unverified citation costs on the record. That's the whole calculation.
